BARTIJOTTO, Juliana. About the Unheimlich: between Literature and the Reality of the Media. Analytica [online]. 2021, vol.10, n.18, pp.1-20. ISSN 2316-5197.
This article aims to apprehend the Unheimlich, a concept on the return of the repressed, theorized by Freud. To support this research, we will first study the following literary works: The Sandman, Ernest Hoffman; The Stranger, Albert Camus; Bartleby, the writer, Herman Melville. Then, in a second step, we will focus on the impact of the shocking image of Aylan Kurdi, the Syrian boy found dead in 2015, in the media. The photography served as a reference image, and brought the Unheimlich to the fore in the media virtual space. This image has gone viral, spread worldwide. Voted best photograph of 2015 by journalists, it embodies the symbol of the refugee crisis. It appears, from the analysis of literary works and the image, that the Unheimlich is an awakening of anguish that can arise in the individual, but also collectively. The collective implies the status of discourse and ideology. In this case the Unheimlich is structural. It can manifest itself in the relationship of the subject to the Other. The process of ideological identification and questioning is a condition for the appearance of the Unheimlich, touching the unconscious (repressed) and causing anxiety (worrying strangeness). This is reflected in both the Literature and the images of barbarism that are currently circulating in the media.
