JAGER, Márcia Elisa e BOTTOLI, Cristiane. Paternity: existence of the first child and familiar changes. Psicol. teor. prat. [online]. 2011, vol.13, n.1, pp.141-153. ISSN 1516-3687.
This study aimed to understand how men feel upon arrival of their new baby at home, after delivery and the implications of this phenomenon in the familiar life. Four fathers participated of this study that experienced for the first time the paternity. Father’s were interviewed up to the 15th day after delivery and answers were analyzed based on described content. The results indicate that fathers want to feel included in the baby’s care, but shyly, because issues of gender influenced the discurse of the fathers. The feeling of affective detachment between the couple appeared as a significative factor of this period and the male responsibilities pre-determined by the society, like kid’s education and role as financial head of the house were their main concerns at the moment they become fathers. These results made us conclude the existence of a tradicional parenthood carried out by these fathers, since their performance during this period is dictated by gender values still instituted by the society.
