DE OLIVEIRA, Maria Cláudia Santos Lopes; CAMILO, Adriana Almeida  e  ASSUNCAO, Cristina Valadares. Urban tribes as a context for the development during adolescence: peer transactions and negotiation of differences. Temas psicol. [online]. 2003, vol.11, n.1, pp.61-75. ISSN 1413-389X.

The involvement in novel peer groups is a main feature of adolescence. The group represents the opportunity to try novel social and affective possibilities that improve conditions for the adolescent’s global development. In great urban centers nowadays, the urban tribes are described as semi-structured groupings of youngsters who share the interest for the same aspects of youth’s culture related to lifestyle, culture, and leisure. The young population of Brazilia (Brazil) is constituted of broad social, economic, and geographic diversity. The urban tribes are a strategy to improve social aggregation. This paper investigates the role of the urban tribes of Brazilia as contexts for social development in adolescence, identifying the links between tribes, construction of self identity during adolescence and the sense of otherness. Participated of the study 20 subjects (11 females and 9 males), self-identified as members of urban tribes who were been contacted in public areas of Brazilia and interviewed in that context. The topics approached were: urban tribes as contexts for social development of adolescents; tribes as semiotic systems; identity and otherness in the context of urban tribes. Results indicate meaningful differences in regard to age and gender in reference to the role of tribes in the process of identity development. Music style, aesthetic elements, and leisure activities were the main aspects that define a certain tribe. Also, that each tribe develops internal and external mechanisms to protect its semiotic structure, stressing its own social image, by contrast to the others.
