This paper has as its source the clinical practice with families having a handicapped child. Even if it is true that each family undergoes this problem in a particular manner, some common features in this process have been observed, regardless of the disability concerned. Such features were described, with a special importance given to fraternal bond. The birth of a handicapped child implies a painful and stressful process for the family. Reactions arise due to the reality of a handicapped child: dismiss, that is the lack of a place to record something from reality. If something is dismissed, it does not exist. And the denial, which would be yes, but it is indeed no. Yes, it exists, but it does not seem to be like that (both mechanisms are illustrated through clinical vignettes). Examples will be given through mythical stories showing how the origin of disability has been subsequently explained since ancient times till nowadays.
