The main objective of this research was to describe and to discuss the individual, social and programmatic vulnerability experienced by family caregivers of elderly during hospitalization. Participants were 15 caregivers, 11 women and 4 men, aged between 29 and 71 years and who were caring for more than 15 days of a hospitalized elderly in a public hospital. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and the method of discursive practices was used to analyze the data organized around three theoretical categories: individual, social and programmatic vulnerability. The data pointed to the risk of overload related to the length of stay in hospital, experiencing the possibility of loss of a family member, the demands on questions of gender and the failure of health services to meet the needs of caregivers during hospitalization and after. It discusses the importance of recognizing the needs of caregivers
