TENORIO, Paula Jaeger; AVELAR, Telma Costa de e BARROS, Érika Neves de. Molar pregnancy: from dream to grief. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2019, vol.39, n.97, pp.193-206. ISSN 1415-711X.
Molar pregnancy (MP) belongs to the group of Gestational Trophoblastic Diseases (GTD). Despite the high cure rates, some cases can progress to neoplasia. The MP diagnosis affects the woman's body and the emotional state by discovering the inexistent fetus or the impossibility of gestation continuation, and by facing the disease's malignant potential. This article aims to know how women with MP experience pregnancy loss and the disease diagnosis / prognosis. This is a qualitative study performed with 15 women with MP in outpatient follow-up.The interviews were interpreted through Bardin Content Analysis. The results identified the experience of grieving and a disenfranchised grief by society and by the bereaved herself, with significant emotional repercussions to women and their relatives, increased by pregnancy loss, disease strangeness, stigma surrounding the cancer and secondary losses from treatment. Spirituality, family and support among patients were identified as coping strategies. Knowledge of this experience can provide integral assistance to these women and their relatives. The presence of support groups in GTD centers of reference consists in a health and care strategy by embracing emotional aspects, promoting healthy grief elaboration and greater adherence to treatment.
