SOUZA, Elislaine Cristina Pereira de  e  ARAUJO, Tereza Cristina Cavalcanti Ferreira de. Perception of Residency Training in Health Area: Needs, Expectations and Challenges. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2018, vol.21, n.1, pp.36-55. ISSN 1516-0858.

In the health field, studies show that qualification at residency levels involves multiple challenges associated with the teaching-learning process and in-service training. Considering these assumptions, a descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out with the purpose of covering and analysing the perception of residents regarding their needs, expectations and struggles. Therefore, a sample of 90 participants (M age = 26.11 years; SD = 3.54) from multiple professional categories and programs was gathered. Data was collected through an online survey with the following instruments: Sociodemographic and Occupational Questionnaire; Ways of Coping Inventory; and Risk of Pathogenic Suffering at Work Inventory (IRIS). The highlighted coping strategies were: social support, positive reassessment and problem solving. The usefulness perception during professional practice seems to be a protection factor in face of the risks of illness due to insufficient personnel, work overload and lack of recognition. The responses to IRIS indicated that situations of suffering tend to overlap with those related to pleasure. To subsidize grounded public policies, more research on training and performance under residence is suggested, especially with specific instruments and diversified qualitative methodologies.

Palavras-chave : professional education; residency; coping; pleasure; suffering.
