NASCIMENTO, Inês e COIMBRA, Joaquim Luís. Demands, problems and intervention processes: some dilemmas in vocational psychological counselling. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2005, vol.6, n.2, pp.1-14. ISSN 1984-7270.
The clients explicit demand is what first informs the psychologist about the kind of questions that are problematic for him/her and that s/he wants to resolve. However, the clients vision about his/her problem not always allows for an immediate identification of the critical variables of his/her present state and it could make it difficult to access a more comprehensive framework of his/her real help needs. The present article intends to highlight some limitations that may underlie the clients primary demands, especially in vocational psychological counselling. Additionally, it tries to point out some aspects of the psychologists judgement, which could lead professionals to define counselling goals, that diverge from the clients expectations. It is considered appropriated that the clients original perceptions and requests define the initial psychological themes of the counselling process but it also emphasizes the importance to motivate the client for the accepting of other relevant intervention areas not expressed in his/her first demand.
