GONCALVES, Carlos Manuel e COIMBRA, Joaquim Luís. Parents role in the construction of their childrens career. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2007, vol.8, n.1, pp.1-17. ISSN 1984-7270.
Paths Starting from a developmental, ecological, constructivist approach to vocational development, the goal of this study was to analyze parents explicit and implicit actions to influence their childrens career paths by means of a variety of ways, namely (a) concrete exploration activities jointly developed by parents and children; (b) supporting them with their vocational choices; (c) family discourses about meanings of work. The subjects were 20 adolescents/students from the 9th and 12th grades and their parents from Northern Portugal. From semi-structured interviews conducted with them we tried to understand the parents roles in helping their children with their career choices and analyse how their children experienced family influences in the construction of their career paths. Results are discussed as well as their implications for psychological intervention.
