MAGALHAES, Mauro de Oliveira. Generativity and attachment to career and organization: discussing the bases of organizational commitment. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.2, pp.67-80. ISSN 1984-7270.
The research on individual’s connections to work has a history of diversity of concepts and measures. The Meyer and Allen’s three-dimensional model of organizational commitment represents the three major research traditions on the psychological basis of this connection: affective, normative and instrumental. Research has found that the instrumental basis relates in a different way with desirable behaviors for the organization and the individual than the other bases. To tackle this question were investigated the relationships between the bases of organizational commitment and the constructs: career commitment, career entrenchment, and generativity. A sample of 190 graduated professionals, 119 men and 71 women, participated in the study. The correlations found suggest that the three-dimensional model of the bases of organizational commitment in terms of the adequacy of the instrumental basis should be reviewed as a way of organizational commitment.
