ANDRADE, Ana Maria Jung de  e  TEIXEIRA, Marco Antônio Pereira. University adjustment of foreign students: a study with undergraduates in a covenant program. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2009, vol.10, n.1, pp.33-44. ISSN 1984-7270.

This study intended to evaluate some aspects of foreign students’ adjustment, at one Federal University: global adaptation and satisfaction with their current life context, main difficulties perceived and satisfaction with specific aspects. All students participated in a international covenant program called Undergraduate Student Agreement Program (PEC-G). Twenty-nine undergraduate students (representing 50% of the population), mainly from Africa, answered a questionnaire. Most of the students reported medium or good adaptation level. The major difficulties mentioned were in relation to family, health and housing and less satisfaction was reported about leisure activities and health assistance. The main services they would like to count on at that moment would be career counseling, housing, and health assistance. This study indicates the need for considering cultural aspects when assisting those students, especially when arriving, and the need for further research examining different variables involved in adaptation.
