BRITO, Fernanda de Souza e BAKOS, Daniela Di Giorgio Schneider. Procrastination and cognitive-behavioral therapy: an integrative review. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2013, vol.9, n.1, pp.34-41. ISSN 1808-5687. https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20130006.
Procrastination relates to the delay of decisions and tasks commonly associated with significant psychological distress. It is a prevalent behavior and considered complex because it involves cognitive, emotional and behavioral components that provide the procrastinator temporary comfort front of an aversive task. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) emphasizes the modification of beliefs to produce changes in behavior, so this theoretical study conducted an integrative review of national and international literature on CBT about procrastination in order to provide a current overview of studies in the cognitive behavioral approach. The review was conducted in the PsycINFO and PEPSIC databases from the descriptor procrastination, its derivatives and correspondences in English and Spanish. Using the inclusion/exclusion criteria, sixteen journal articles were retrieved from the period 1999-2013. Review indicated a scarce but growing interest in the topic, revealing factors related to procrastination, as metacognitions, which can provide important insights for the treatment of chronic procrastinators. It is suggested that future research diversify the sample of participants in order to study procrastination among other populations and not only in the university.
