COSTA, Sílvia Maria Pereira da Silva et al. Early maladaptive schemes and suicide: a systematic review. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2023, vol.19, n.1, pp.104-112.  Epub 01-Jul-2024. ISSN 1808-5687.  https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20230013.

Suicide has become a complex and multicausal phenomenon considered a serious public health problem in society and the indexes show that this risk behavior may increase even more nowadays. Initial maladaptive schemas (EMSs), on the other hand, are defined as core beliefs that provoke dysfunctional emotional and behavioral responses

Objectives:

To investigate the findings related to the topic and understand the relationship between EMSs and suicide.

Method:

A systematic review of articles from the last 10 years was conducted using the BVS, Psyinfo and Pubmed/Medline databases. The descriptors used were: early maladaptive schemas AND suicide*, (schema therapy OR early maladaptive schemas) AND suicide* and early maladaptive schemas AND suicide. Seven empirical papers were selected in the final sample.

Results and Discussion:

Few articles were found on the subject, with assessment of patients with different psychiatric diagnoses at risk for suicide, using Schema Therapy. The results indicated that there is no consensus. However, in general, schemas such as Social Isolation/Alienation, Defectiveness/Shame, Distrust/Abuse, and Drag/Greatness were pointed out as prevalent in suicide risk. This suggests the need for further research on the same topic, as well as understanding the positive implications of the effectiveness of Schema Therapy on suicide risk.
