Emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) in childhood can have a negative impact on academic and social development, increasing the likelihood of mental disorders in adulthood. EBPs have a multifactorial etiology, but parental practices and family characteristics are emphasized as key factors. The objective of this study was to characterize 4,514 caregivers of children residing in the city with the highest number of municipal schools in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) in terms of sociodemographic, occupational, and mental health characteristics. Additionally, the study aimed to assess their perception of their children’s education and examine the association between these variables and indicators of EBPs in children. It was found that low parental income and education, the presence of symptoms such as worry, irritability, depression, and stress, as well as marital problems, difficulty in disciplining, and feeling tired while playing with the child, were associated with the presence of EBPs in childhood. Seeking professional help and being less satisfied with the child’s school were also associated with EBPs. Greater difficulty in disciplining the child and experiencing stress or sadness were predictive factors for children presenting with EBPs. These data can support governmental authorities and organizations in developing proposals that can provide a more promising and secure future for children.
