CAETANO, Kátia Alessandra de Souza  e  NEUFELD, Carmem Beatriz. Effects of Trial-based Cognitive Therapy on Social Anxiety Disorder, psychological distress, and attentional bias: reports from a randomized clinical trial. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2023, vol.19, n.spe1, pp.82-92.  Epub 15-Jul-2024. ISSN 1808-5687.  https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20230037.

Despite Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) be usually considered the gold standard for the treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), many patients do not benefit significantly from this intervention. Trial-Based Cognitive Therapy (TBCT) is a new approach within the field of CBT area that has shown efficacy in treating several psychiatric conditions. This study aims to assess whether SAD participants receiving TBCT individual-sessions differ from a SAD waiting list group condition regarding symptoms of social anxiety, anxiety, mental suffering and attentional bias. This is a randomized clinical trial with two groups which compared TBCT (n=18) and a Waitlist control condition (n=21), using self-report scales and emotional Stroop test at pre and post-test. TBCT was delivered in sixteen 1.5-hour sessions using the individual format. There were reductions in social anxiety, anxiety and mental suffering symptoms at TBCT group but not in the Waitlist condition. Regarding attentional bias, although the reaction to emotional words was longer than to neutral ones, no significant differences were found among the groups at pre-test nor at post-test. This result may be related to the type and format of the attentional bias test adopted.
