GOMES, Bernardo Carramão e LAFER, Beny. Methodological reflections on research practice in group psychotherapy for bipolar disorder: a narrative review. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2023, vol.19, n.spe1, pp.104-113. Epub 15-Jul-2024. ISSN 1808-5687. https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20230039.
Introduction:
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a complex clinical condition marked by episodes of mania and depression. Its appropriate management involves drug treatment to prevent the recurrence of new episodes. However, even when using appropriate medications people with BD may present symptoms and episodes and that is why non-pharmacological treatments are extremely important, especially psychotherapy. In Brazil, different research groups have been developing psychotherapy research protocols for BD with a focus on prophylaxis of new episodes and reduction of mood symptoms.
Objective:
This article aims to review the findings on psychotherapy for BD produced in Brazil as well as important methodological points.
Results:
6 articles on psychotherapy for BD produced in Brazil were found, all in outpatient clinics linked to the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), carried out during masters and doctoral research. None of them followed their patients for a period longer than 12 months nor was it converted into a proposal to serve this population within the SUS.
Conclusion:
Studies are still needed to prove the efficacy/ effectiveness of psychotherapies for people with BD, especially in our reality, with a view to promoting its implementation in the assistance network linked to the SUS.
