CARDOSO, Bruno Luiz Avelino; MURTA, Sheila Giardini e DEL-PRETTE, Zilda Aparecida Pereira. Preliminary considerations for the development of couples’ social skills training programs for couples in sexual and gender diversity. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2023, vol.19, n.spe1, pp.133-145. The theoretical and practical field of social skills has been the setting for various research endeavors. However, when seeking intervention studies involving couples, particularly from the perspective of social skills training (SST), research tends to focus on specific categories of behaviors as the intervention targets. Only a few studies address the themes of gender or sexual orientation as variables influencing couples social skills. This remains a relatively underexplored area within the field of SST, leaving ample room for discussion and the development of programs. The objective of this narrative review study is to present the conceptual, theoretical, and practical foundations of SST applied to couples within sexual and gender diversity. It aims to discuss implications regarding: (a) the influence of society on the performance of social skills in these couples; (b) research and justifications for creating programs tailored to sexual and gender diversity; (c) recommendations, precautions, and key topics for intervening in couples social skills. Understanding the specificities of these concepts and their applicability tends to result in interventions customized to participants needs, emphasizing the requirements of social competence, and avoiding the perpetuation of stigma.
