ALMEIDA, Nazaré de Oliveira; DEMARZO, Marcelo e NEUFELD, Carmem Beatriz. Compassion-based interventions for obesity-related behaviors: a systematic review. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2023, vol.19, n.spe1, pp.203-227. Epub 15-Jul-2024. ISSN 1808-5687. https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20230045.
In recent years, an increase in the popularity of self-compassion-based interventions in the management of eating disorders has been observed. Therefore, this study carried out a systematic review to map methods and types of evidence in the treatment of obesity-related eating behaviors, such as sedentary lifestyle, binge eating, emotional eating, external eating and body image shame. The search was conducted following PRISMA guidelines in the following databases: PsycINFO, EMBASE, Medline, PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane Libraries. We included 26 studies that described a self-compassion intervention or use of self-compassion exercises as part of the intervention, included at least one eating behavior related to health or obesity, and also studies resulting in body dissatisfaction or shame. Interventions used a variety of approaches to implement self-compassion training. Findings from this review point to effective weight management outcomes following self-compassion interven tions. However, the variety of designs, effect sizes obtained from the results of the included studies, the low sustainability of the results over time and the methodology of the studies suggest that more studies need to be done so that the association between weight loss and related factors and compassion is significantly identified.
