INTRODUCTION: Counseling adolescents in conflict with the law becomes more challenging when they use drugs. OBJECTIVE: to describe the self-perception of professionals in the socio-educational system about skills, working conditions, support network and personal and professional satisfaction. METHOD: a cross-sectional study based on a training course on drugs and human rights for professionals from the socio-educational system of the Federal District/Brazil. RESULTS: the majority received training on drugs (56.7%), performed care (86.7%), but did not feel qualified (85.4%); professional performance (43.6%) and personal performance (48.7%) considered to be good; physical space (48.7%), relation between units (44.7%) and satisfaction with work (42.3%) considered reasonable; availability of materials (42.5%), number of professionals (38.2%) and community relations (29.3%) considered to be very bad. CONCLUSION: training is important and the method used should be capable of impacting the performance of the professional at work.
