RIVERA, Emir; PONS, José I.; ROSARIO-HERNANDEZ, Ernesto e ORTIZ, Nydia. Traducción y adaptación para la población puertorriqueña del Inventario Bar-On de Cociente Emocional (Bar-On EQ-i): análisis de propiedades psicométricas. Rev. Puertorriq. Psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.19, pp.148-182. ISSN 1946-2026.
This article presents the psychometric studies done with the experimental versión of the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory (Bar-On EQ-i) translated and adapted for a Puerto Rican population. We begin with an analysis of the Emotional Intelligence (El) construct from its neurobiological, cognitive and social components, and its relationship with the intelligence construct. Based upon this theoretical framework, the Bar-On EQ-i test is described and a summary of the translation and adaptation process of the test is presented. To determine the reliability of this adapted versión of the test, studies of its internal consistency and temporal reliability were conducted with a sample of 219 Puerto Rican participants. The fifteen subscales of the original versión of the test were not replicated through confirmatory factor analysis. Besides the reliability studies, the Bar-On EQ-i subscales were correlated between them and with the Social Desirability Scale (SDE), through which evidence of divergent and convergent validity was obtained. Additional evidence of the test's validity was obtained through the inter correlations between subtests and between components of the test. It is concluded that this versión of the test partially meets basic psychometric criteria of reliability and validity and that additional studies with a larger sample are needed to verify the adequacy of the test for use with the Puerto Rican population.
