Violence against women has been considered epidemic. Among young couples it has increased, but there are few studies with this population. Results from a qualitative study with 10 women who experienced violence from their male partner during adolescence are presented. Participants suffered all forms of violence (verbal, physical, emotional, psychological & sexual). Many reported psychological effects as depression and low self esteem. Traditional ideas and beliefs towards gender roles were identified in all women. Parental role was described as indirect support or spectator of their daughter's situation. Helping professionals were not seen as a support system. Some women isolated from peers in response to partner's pressure or to protect and justify his actions. Participants identified educational goals and transition to university level as decisive factors for their awareness and for taking control of their lives.
