ALMEIDA, Bruna Rocha de e PEREIRA-SILVA, Nara Liana. Living with a sibling with Down's syndrome. Psicol. pesq. [online]. 2015, vol.9, n.1, pp.10-19. ISSN 1982-1247. https://doi.org/10.5327/Z1982-1247201500010003.
This study aimed at identifying the knowledge of siblings with typical development about Down's syndrome, and describing their and their parents' perception regarding the act of living with a sibling with Down's syndrome. It focused on the responsibilities of the sibling with typical development compared to the sibling with Down's syndrome and household chores. Mothers (n=10) answered the Questionnaire of Family System Characteristics, and both parents (n=20) and siblings with typical development (n=9) answered semi-structured interviews. Most siblings have no knowledge about Down's syndrome. There are similarities and differences regarding the perceptions of parents and siblings about the characteristics of fraternal living. The data suggest that, in these families, the presence of Down's syndrome is not harmful to the living habits.
