Basic emotions are biologically determined emotional states, whose expression is universal and innate. There are two ways to assess emotional recognition: in the face and voice (prosody). Emotional prosody refers to the transmission, through the melodic intonation of language, of the individual´s emotional state. The aim of this study is to study the presence of alterations in facial recognition of basic emotions and emotional prosody in the beheavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). A cohort of 14 patients from the Laboratorio de Deterioro Cognitivo - HIGA Eva Perón with bvDFT diagnosis was assessed. Using 60 photographs of the Pictures of Facial Affect, a battery was administered, composed of three tasks, selecting, mating and designation. For the assessment of emotional prosody the subtest Emotional prosody - comprehension of the Protocolo para la evaluación de la Comunicación de Montreal (MEC) was used. Significant differences were found between controls and patients in facial recognition of basic emotion: selection (F = 12,287, p = 0.002), mating (F = 11,492, p = 0.002), name (F = 13,721, p = 0.001) and total emotions (F = 17,339, P = 0.000). 71% of patients showed alterations in in facial recognition of basic emotion. The MEC subtest Emotional prosody - comprehension showed significant correlations with facial recognition tests of basic emotions selection (Pearson r 0.669, p. 0.012), mating (Pearson r 0.554, p 0.05), and total emotions (Pearson r 0.632, p 0.020). These findings suggest that the alteration in the basic emotion recognition in the bvFTD may involve multiple modalities.
