The goal of the present study was to investigate whether parental education and family predict intelligence in a sample of Brazilian children 6-12 years old on two intelligence measures. Four hundred and eighteen children, female or male, from private and public schools of Porto Alegre, were evaluated. One hundred and ninety-three participants were assessed by the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) (group 1) and 225 by Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices (group 2). The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to investigate the association between socioeconomic variables and intelligence. Then, the significant variables were entered into a multiple linear regression model (stepwise). Poor to moderate positive correlations were found between parents' education, IQ obtained on the WASI and percentile on Raven as well as between the income and the same measures of intelligence. The parental education was also associated with raw scores achieved in the Matrix Reasoning and Vocabulary subtests of the WASI. The father's education and family income explained 15% of variance in IQ of WASI. In the Matrix Reasoning subtest, the most explaining variable is the father's education (8%). Vocabulary, the mother's education is the best predictor (22%). In Raven, income predicts 6% of the variance in percentile. Socioeconomic variables, by means of environmental conditions offered to the children, play a role in the development of children's intelligence, especially in verbal measures.
