CHERIX, Katia e COELHO JUNIOR, Nelson Ernesto. Mourning and melancholia in dementias: psychoanalysis in the clinic of aging. Trivium [online]. 2018, vol.10, n.2, pp.182-195. ISSN 2176-4891. https://doi.org/10.18379/2176-4891.2018v2p.182.
The issue of real and symbolic losses is a fundamental pillar for the understanding of the clinic of aging and the psychopathologies that arise with the advancement of age. The elderly live in constant mourning in the face of absences that need to be accepted and subjectivated. When they do not find external and internal protection or a history of unprocessed mourning that adds to the present, the Self can regress and use the defense of the split, as in the case of melancholy. In this article we propose in the light of Freudian metapsychology a new look at the phenomenon of memory loss that can lead to the onset of dementias.
