BELARMINO, Victor; DIMENSTEIN, Magda  e  LEITE, Jáder. Mental Health of Gay Men in the Pandemic. Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.4, pp.153-166.  Epub 08-Jul-2024. ISSN 2177-093X.  https://doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v14i4.2075.

Previous vulnerabilities and chronic suffering related to prejudice, homophobia, and discrimination mark the daily life of gays, which have gained new contours in the face of the health restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Aiming to understand the factors of vulnerability and mental illness in gays, an exploratory survey was carried out in 2020 with 43 gay men, with the application of an electronic questionnaire and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) tool. Beyond that, interviews with semi-structured script was carried out with 8 participants. A high percentage of 60.5% was found in the Common Mental Disorder (CMD) indicative among the respondents. CMDs are associated with social markers such as race, income, education, as well as housing, inequalities in access and circulation in the city and, particularly, being effeminate gay. Sanitary restrictions imposed the intensification of conservative and heteronormative family relationships and the reduction of mobility, distancing from community ties and gay sociability, aggravating the state of mental health.
