FREITAS, Mariana Moulin Brunow e CALIMAN, Luciana Vieira. Health and Psychotropics in the Prision System. Rev. Polis Psique [online]. 2017, vol.7, n.3, pp.61-83. ISSN 2238-152X.
Health and the use of psychotropics within the prison system constitute a paradox. Health practices can bolster strategies of control and produce mortification, as well as elude biopolitical investments and cause resistance. Conditions of confinement are very poor and contribute to the pervasiveness and spread of infectious diseases. In face of these conditions, the National Policy for Comprehensive Health for Persons Deprived of Liberty in the Prison System (PNAISP) was approved in 2014 in concordance with the principles of the Brazilian national public health system (SUS). The passing of this legislation sought to guarantee universal healthcare coverage and access to inmate populations. In this context, the article discusses prison health practices and the use of psychotropic drugs by inmates at the Maximum Security Penitentiary II, located within the Penitentiary Complex of Viana in Espírito Santo, Brazil.
