ALBERTO, Maria de Fatima Pereira; PAIVA NETO, José Rangel de; SANTANA, Sérgio Rodrigues de e SEIXAS, Pablo de Sousa. Institutionalization of the graduation in psychology. Rev. Subj. [online]. 2018, vol.18, n.1, pp.106-118. ISSN 2359-0769. https://doi.org/10.5020/23590777.rs.v18i1.6975.
The purpose of this article is to analyze the history of the institutionalization of Psychology at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), considering the context in which it was located. To do so, it was necessary to understand the course creation process, that is, its historical-cultural context, the demand, the social subjects and the theoretical and methodological formats that it assumes. We used documents from the institution's collection and 13 interviews with active and retired Psychology Department teachers who participated in the institutionalization process or the initial years of the undergraduate course. The data reveal three influences in the institutionalization: the initial demand and the historical context, the faculty and its characteristics, and the theoretical-methodological format. The initial demand and the historical context highlight the process of "modernization" of the city of João Pessoa, the academic necessity of the productivist character of Psychology as a science and a market space. The context of implementation of the Psychology course of the UFPB takes place between the second and third periods of the civil-military dictatorship in Brazil, at the time of the university expansion of the UFPB, which allowed the approval of the course and hiring of several professors coming from inside and outside of the state that, in line with the national and international Psychology, reproduce the hegemonic model, of elitist character, that did not face the moment experienced, of restriction of rights. These aspects, according to the social actors of the time, have direct repercussions on the theoretical and methodological orientation of the first teachers, divided between two groups: one more aligned to a hegemonic, positivist and private model; and the other, to a more collective and communitarian model with counter-hegemonic characteristics. The model of course and formation of Psychology in the UFPB ends up centralizing the production of knowledge and establishing the formative model to be adopted in the region.
