BORGES, Livia de Oliveira. Crenças do trabalho: diferenças entre acadêmicos e dirigentes de empresas. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2001, vol.1, n.1, pp.43-67. ISSN 1984-6657.

The recem changes in the world of work raise doubts about the behefs held by individuaLs. One empirical study in the Umted States Idenufied the persistence of five belief systems - Work Ethic, Organizational Beliefs, Marxist-Related Behefs, Humanist Beliefs and a Leisure Ethic - with a strengthening of the last two. ln order to diagnose the belief systems predominant among company managers and academrcs (university professors, managers and professionals)in Brazil, a questionnaire was issued to a sample of 553 participants. The answers were studied through factor analysis, Idenufymg 5 factors of which the first (α= 0.81) indicates a strong humamst trend, similar to the U.S. study. The other factors were less consistent (Cronbach Alpha from 0.60 to 0.71), and differ from the U.S. study, indicating a rejection of the leisure ethic. Comparing the factor scores between academics and company managers, the first tend to present higher scores than the last for the second factor that refers to social differences, and the importance of participation. ln the conclusion, this article attempts to explain the results offering a review of histoncal aspects of work beliefs, and Brazilian peculiarities
