JUVENIL, Carolyne Batista; TAVARES, Jeane Saskya Campos  e  VENTURA, Paula Rui. “It’s not me, it’s society: Schema Therapy in a clinical case of multiple internalized oppression. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. Internalized Social Oppression is associated with higher levels of psychological distress among members of social minorities groups. This study aims to propose an intervention in Schema Therapy for the management of clinical cases of multiple internalized oppressions through the case of a 22 years old female university student with no co-morbid diagnosis. Experiences of sexism, racism and regional prejudice were identified as important contributors to the origin and maintenance of the early maladaptive schemas “Defectivity / Shame” and “Social Isolation / Alienation”. Treatment was aimed at changing schematic content through strategies such as psychoeducation about schemas and social oppression, limited reparenting in the context of the therapeutic relationship and in imaginary exercises, chair work focused on the multiple internalized oppressions and assertiveness training. Post-treatment changes could be observed in the problems that inspired the patient to seek help as well as cognitive and affective changes in the schematic content and in the repertoire of behavioural strategies. We conclude that incorporating sociocultural elements to the case formulation and management in Schema Therapy can have a positive impact regarding distress associated with experiences of multiple internalized oppressions, representing an important step towards promoting health among social minorities.
