PICK, Susan et al. Scale for the Measurement of Personal Agency and Empowerment (ESAGE). Interam. j. psychol. [online]. 2007, vol.41, n.3, pp.295-304. ISSN 0034-9690.
The literature contains an extensive discussion regarding the importance of human development. The macro-goal of human development also requires the formation of capabilities at the personal level, which lead to psycho-social growth and sustainability. Central to this discussion are the concepts of personal agency and empowerment. The distinction between the two concepts has not always been clear; often they are used indistinctively. Based on the practical experience of designing, implementing and evaluating human development programs with marginalized populations, we have developed the Personal Agency and Empowerment (ESAGE, Scale for its initials in Spanish) composed of two subscales: personal agency (35 items) and empowerment (67items). Both have demonstrated a high degree of internal consistency (Cronbach alphas of .718 and .749 respectively).
