POMBO, Mariana. Crisis of patriarchy and paternal function: a current debate in psychoanalysis. Psicol. clin. [online]. 2018, vol.30, n.3, pp.447-470. ISSN 0103-5665. https://doi.org/10.33208/PC1980-5438v0030n03A03.
Considering the crisis of patriarchy, which has gathered strength since the 1960s, this article intends to present and examine a current debate in the field of psychoanalysis about paternal function. First, we shall analyse how the paternal function is developed in the theories of Freud and Lacan. After that, we shall consider the stance of the psychoanalysts Jean-Pierre Lebrun, Michel Schneider and Charles Melman, who seem to associate the crisis of patriarchy with the crisis of paternal function, understood as an ahistorical category. They argue that the exercise of paternal function depends on the hierarchy between the sexes and between the father and the mother. Finally, we shall explore the ideas of psychoanalysts Michel Tort and Geneviève Delaisi de Parseval, who prize and rethink the paternal function nowadays, understood as a historical category, independent from paternal authority and masculine domination that brand the patriarchy. According to this stance, the crisis of patriarchy makes room to think about new forms of subjectivation.
