MAGALHAES, Mauro de Oliveira e GOMES, William B.. Experiential Perspective of Vocational Indecision in Adolescents. Rev. ABOP [online]. 1998, vol.2, n.1, pp.21-58. ISSN 1414-8889.
This study interviewed six males and six females, ranging in age from 17 to 20, about their experience of vocational decision-making. All of them were clients of UFRGS Vocational Counseling Service. The interview topics included themes such as self-concepts, decision-making styles, and vocational exploratory behavior. The reports obtained were punctuated by the three steps of the semiotic phenomenological method: description, reduction, and interpretation. The description presents the experience of decision-making in categories such as self-concept exploration, commitment to the decision-making task, life projects, and the labor market. The reduction contrasts the experience of vocational decision and indecision. The interpretation defines indecision as an attitudinal indisposition for exploratory behavior in a personal context of affective difficulties. In contrast, it defines the vocational decision as active exploratory behavior guided by an autonomy for decision-making that becomes effective career planning.
