LAWRENZ, Priscila et al. Styles, practices or parental skills: how to differentiate them?. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2020, vol.16, n.1, pp.02-09. ISSN 1808-5687.  https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20200002.

This study aims to present and differentiate the concepts of parenting styles, parental practices and parental educational social skills. The concepts are analyzed as factors that contribute, or not, to the occurrence of child maltreatment. It was possible to verify that the concepts are not always clearly described and differentiated in the literature. Thus, the definitions were presented based on authors recognized by the studies that have been developed in the area for decades. Articles were selected from national and international databases. Parenting styles are defined as the set of parents' attitudes and practices towards their children that characterize the nature of their interaction. Parenting practices involve techniques used by parents in specific situations of interaction with their children. They are less stable than parenting styles and are influenced by culture. Parental educational social skills, on the other hand, are understood as the set of parental social skills applicable to the education of their children and contributing to their development and learning. The discussion carried out in this study may contribute to the work of psychologists who work in the care of children and their families.

Palavras-chave : Parenting styles; Parenting practices; Parental educational social skills.
