INTRODUCTION: Self-care in children with chronic diseases can be promoted or impaired by parental behavior. This study aimed to analyze the relation between maternal control practices (appropriate support vs. psychological control) and self-care in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1). METHOD: The sample comprised 23 mothers of children with DM1, who responded to a semi-structured interview about maternal control practices and the Pediatric Diabetes Routine Questionnaire, which assessed children's self-care. RESULTS: Mother's appropriate support, especially when expressed as explanations, encouragement, and positive affection, was an effective predictor of child self-care. DISCUSSION: The appropriate support favors children's achievement of autonomy, allowing them to become progressively more capable of taking care of their own health. CONCLUSIONS: Intervention programs for children with DM1 and their families should promote parents' appropriate supportive practices.
