SALLES, Ana Cristina Teixeira da Costa  e  CECCARELLI, Paulo Roberto. The invention of sexuality. Reverso [online]. 2010, vol.32, n.60, pp.15-24. ISSN 0102-7395.

The authors assume that all societies have always been challenged by the enigma of sexual, which led them to create discourses to cope with drives demands. Through a socio-historical digression, the authors show how the Western World created ways to deal with this enigma, leading to what might be called the "invention of sexuality". The discourses on sexuality appear at precise socio-historical periods as attempts to regulate the sexual practice in accordance with the standards of a given time, in order to control social and political behaviors by controlling body and sexuality. Being the regulation of sex an issue of the State, of the ruling elites and of religion, the text proposes to show how the "moral" of each of these instances creates both the discourse about sexuality and its regulation, as well as means to control it or even to cure its "deviant" manifestations. The endless approaches that for centuries have been attributed to this constitutive dimension of the human, portrays the particular destination that our culture has given to the sexual. The interest of discussing this theme is to show how our theories and our clinical practice are tributary to culture. For the authors, psychoanalysis, a creation of Western culture, may only be properly understood from the historical perspective that preceded it.
