ROUSSILLON, René. The symbolizing function. J. psicanal. [online]. 2015, vol.48, n.89, pp.257-286. ISSN 0103-5835.

The author devotes himself to deepen the role and the function of the primary object in the development of the subject's abilities of symbolization. The author describes a reciprocal transference of the relationship - or rather, of the rapport with the object - to the relationship - or rather, to the rapport with the symbolizing apparatus or symbolizing activity. Besides the classically described "para-excitation" function of the object, the author highlights a range of "needs of the self". Considering those needs furthers the development of symbolization and the development of the subjective appropriation that it enables. Then, a difference between the object "to be" symbolized and the object "to" symbolize arises, as well as a difference between the relationship with the object and the register of the "use of the object", which belongs more specifically to the issue of the symbolizing function of the object. This object must guarantee a deflective and a reflective function to the subject, must avoid isolation and retaliation in those answers that it (the object) brings to the subject's instinctive movements during the suffering from elaboration, and the object also cannot avoid showing creativeness in this situation.

Palavras-chave : symbolization; primary object; needs of the self; reflexivity; use of the object; flexible means; limits.
