COUTO, Daniela Paula do  e  CASTRO, Júlio Eduardo de. From mental hygiene to chemical hygiene: contributions to a counterpoint between the child seen as an object by hygienism and as the subject of its own truth by Psychoanalysis. Cad. psicanal. [online]. 2015, vol.37, n.32, pp.135-157. ISSN 1413-6295.

By drawing a parallel between the practices of school mental hygiene of the twentieth century and the chemical hygiene practices currently in use, as far as ADHD is concerned, this article examines how the influence of medical-scientific knowledge, widespread in accordance with the lines of academic discourse, is exerted on the child. Phobias and inhibitions, as symptoms once prevailing in childhood, gave way to hyperactivity and inattention. The anxiety that follows such symptoms has suffered a mutation: the child who used to retreat is now restless. While medical-scientific knowledge attempts to restrain this restlessness through medication, Psychoanalysis, based on its ethics, stands as a counterpoint to hygienist approaches and listens to the child’s unique expression.

Palavras-chave : Ethics of Psychoanalysis; university discourse; hygienist practices; ADHD.
