The Learning Disabilities in Reading and Writing becomes a problem in the academic and personal life. This study focuses in the validation of a measuring battery initial skills for reading and writing in children with cleft palate without cleft lip and palate. Perceptual maturity factors were analyzed, body image and spatio-temporal orientation, motor development and language, essential to optimize learning. The objective was to obtain evidence of validity of the initial Skills Assessment Battery for Reading and Writing - BACLE, in a Brazilian sample. 164 students, both sexes, aged 5 to 6 years attending preschool and 1st grade of elementary school, composing two studies called G1, with 134 participants in regular education, and G2, as comparison group, with 30 participants diagnosed with cleft lip and palate. The instruments were used: non-verbal intelligence test for children - R2; and Pre Skills Assessment Battery for Home Reading / Writing - BACLE. In the comparative study of the groups, no statistically significant difference in intellectual level between the two age groups. The data indicated that only the language correlated positively but moderately with the intellectual level (0.23). When compared to the reference group, differences were found in scales Maturity Perceptive-Visual, Perceptive-Handedness maturity, and body-identification scheme in the Other, with a better performance of the participants without cleft. BACLE is an instrument which brought together, in general criteria of reliability, validity and sensitivity, which allow the administration and use for evaluation of cognitive functions purposes.
