Patients with chronic kidney disease who undergo hemodialysis experience many changes due to the treatment, which can cause emotional distress and impairments in the quality of life. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate and correlate depressive symptoms, hopelessness and suicide ideation regarding the quality of life of 100 patients treated at the hemodialysis unit of the Base Hospital of São José do Rio Preto. The mean age ranged from 18 to 80 years (M = 50.69 years, SD 14.54), 51% of patients were male, 60% were married and 87% with sons/daughters. About 78% of patients presented minimal symptoms of depressed mood, and the levels of hopelessness were considered minimal in 62%. The mean level of suicidal ideation were 0.41 and on the quality of life, functional capacity, pain, general health, vitality, social aspects and mental health of the interviewees are above that established by the instrument. Patients undergoing hemodialysis resulted in reduced indicators of hopelessness, depression and suicidal ideation. Quality of life was influenced by the aspects involved in the treatment itself.
