Career literature with quota students is scarce and needs further exploration as to the facilitators and obstacles in their training process. The objective was to understand how quota holders of a federal university in southern Brazil perceive their career development throughout their university course. A multiple case study was conducted with 10 students from three áreas - humanities, health, technological. The data underwent content analysis. It was identified that higher education creates a belief of social ascension, the insertion in extracurricular activities drives that academic satisfaction, and the difficulty of participation on the latter and perspectives on careers at graduate studies. It was also discussed the impact of the elitization in the university configuration on the career development of university students in situations of academic and socioeconomic vulnerability.
