TELLES, Thabata Castelo Branco; BORIS, Georges Daniel Janja Bloc e MOREIRA, Virginia. The actualizing tendency concept in contemporaneous humanistical psychotherapists' clinical practice. Rev. abordagem gestalt. [online]. 2014, vol.20, n.1, pp.13-20. ISSN 1809-6867.
This paper is a critical study about the concept of actualizing tendency of Carl Rogers. This is a key concept for the Person Centred Approach (PCA) and it refers to the tendency to growth and update, inherent in all living beings. The objective of this research was to understand how psychotherapists perceive the expression of actualizing tendency in their clinical practices. Interviews were conducted with ten psychotherapists who worked based in PCA. As data analysis, we used the critical phenomenological method, based in Merleau-Ponty. The results showed that actualizing tendency is considered a fundamental concept in the clinical practice of these professionals. Many of them said that actualizing tendency is a concept which is tied to facilitating conditions. The interviewed psychotherapists also reported that the growth process presents difficulties which deserve consideration in the relationship between psychotherapy and actualizing tendency. They have corroborated in part with Rogers' thought to the extent that some of them pointed out issues which have not been widely discussed by the PCA creator, such as a moral tone in actualizing tendency concept, as well as difficulties arising from the growth process. We conclude that these points may be important research themes to be studied as a result of contemporary developments of the Person Centered Approach.
