This paper aims to discuss an area of psychological interest still poorly studied in Brazil: emergency and individual or collective catastrophes. It presents some disasters, whether natural catastrophes or due to human actions, mainly those related to torrential rains occurring in São Paulo. It also describes the Defesa Civil and its role in attending people in need and the areas of psychological work: interventions in emergency or catastrophe situations and reconstruction and prevention.
