Based upon Stephen King’s idea that the horror productions act as a barometer, pointing out what terrifies some societies, this article aims to propose some thoughts about the possible links among adolescence, cinema, and horror, around the time adolescence emerges as a consolidated social category (in the 1950s). In order to achieve that, we researched the relations between horror, monstrosity, culture, and the development of the horror and teen movies cinematographic genres. We also made a brief film analysis of some important works in the history of these cinematographic genres. We notice that two events occurred in parallel: the emergence of teenage monsters in teen movies on the cinema screens and the allegedly scientific discourses about a monstrous adolescence. We have concluded that perhaps there is a cultural equivalence between adolescence and monstrosity: monsters and teenagers bring to light some fundamental questions for the human being; they incorporate things to which we do not have an answer and point out the limits of our knowledge.
