MAYSONET GUZMAN, Marielisa    TORO-ALFONSO, José. Cuando el cuerpo carga el peso: una mirada clínica y social a la obesidad. Rev. Puertorriq. Psicol. []. 2007, 18, pp.107-117. ISSN 1946-2026.

"About the kindness of the heart talks the mouth". "The eyes are the mirror of the soul". These traditíonal popular phrases place the body as representation of the subject's inner life. The body, as a social phenomenon presents the instauration of the culture in the individual embodiment. The body is also a vehicle of communication with the other; through our body we express our history, emotions and interpersonal relations. This paper try to demonstrate a patient's discourse through the clinic on the meanings a man attributes to his body facing the social demands on embodiment. An obese body which substitutes affects with food and that relates experiences of prejudice, shame, ridicule, and discrimination. Some of the issues addressed were: obesity, nutrition, exercise, binging, cognitive distortions, self-esteem, and corporal image. We present a space for listening and an encounter with a body that overpass limits, a narrative that examines the implications of a morbid obese body in the Puerto Rican social context.
