MENEZES, Gustavo Silva    FRANCA, Lucia Helena. Retirement decision predictors for federal civil servants. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. []. 2012, 12, 3, pp.315-328. ISSN 1984-6657.

The sharp increase in the elderly population makes retirement one of the greatest challenges for various countries, including Brazil. However, there are still few studies about the work-retirement transition and what influences workers' decisions, whether to take up bridge employment (post-retirement work); postponing retirement to continue in the same organization; or full retirement. This research investigated the influence of seven variables on the retirement decision of 148 federal civil servants in Rio de Janeiro. These variables were i) subjective life expectancy; ii) age; iii) perceived health; iv) job perception - involvement and satisfaction; v) hours flexibility; vi) career commitment; and vii) job control. Multiple logistic regressions have shown that: a) age, job perception, hours flexibility, and job control predict the decision to postpone retirement; b) job perception and hours flexibility also predict bridge employment; c) health perception is the only predictor for full retirement. Suggestions are offered for the adoption of human resource policies for the retention of older workers by offering ongoing retraining, job control opportunities, and flexible hours, or by organizing retirement preparation programs to support workers who wish to retire.
