The article aims to review the concept of identity, pointing to the role of difference recognition in this process. The analysis includes the psychoanalytical conceptions of corporal ego limitation, passing through contributions of the critical theory and social psychology as well, to reflect upon the role of nature and culture separation on the construction of identity. It also reviews some most recent ideas of identity production into the narcissistic culture. The ability to deal with the difference and the opposite self are pointed out by the authors reviewed as key elements to the production of this identity process, hence establishing that the lack of contact with the other and the absence of differences acknowledgement may impair the construction of identity.
