Abstract

BALLAS, Yael Gotlieb; ALVES, Irai Cristina Boccato  and  DUARTE, Walquiria Fonseca. Anxiety in adolescents with Diabetes mellitus. Bol. psicol [online]. 2006, vol.56, n.124, pp. 111-125. ISSN 0006-5943.

Adolescence is a period of biological and subjective body changes that presents conflicts and may yet become more conflictive when affected by a disease imposing constraints such as Diabetes Mellitus. This study takes into account the hypothesis that diabetic adolescents would present higher anxiety levels, when compared to healthy adolescents. In order to examine potential differences, it was applied the Trace-State Anxiety Inventory (IDATE). The research comprised 62 adolescents, half of which were diabetics and half healthy, with ages between 14 and 20 years old. Results led to the conclusion that the diabetic adolescents are not different from their healthy peers, regarding anxiety, contradicting some literature data that report more emotional difficulties in this population.

Keywords : Trace-State Anxiety Inventory (IDATE); Adolescence; Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus.
