Abstract

The present study aimed to identify the main issues faced by women following pregnancy loss, as well as to discuss about the psychologist’s role in these situations. Twelve patients aged between 20 and 39 years old that suffered late pregnancy loss were interviewed. The procedure to analyze data obtained was based on Content Analysis. Some of the categories that emerged were: dealing with death and grief, dealing with procedures related to death, decision about seeing the dead baby, decisions about having other children, ambivalence about going home and the importance of the relatives’ presence along the process of the loss. The article presents a discussion about these aspects, pointing out the role of the hospital’s professionals immediately after the pregnancy loss.
