LIMA FILHO, Alberto Pereira. When silence traps. Bol. psicol [online]. 2007, vol.57, n.126, pp. 77-87. ISSN 0006-5943.

The article describes a phenomenon that occurs when a person is trapped into the silence produced by another person, on the interpersonal level; on the intra-psychic level, it imposes a peculiar mode of suffering to the person who remains imprisoned, with all its’ outcomes. The silence that disturbs is characterized by the lack of feedback in an interpersonal relationship, which once was based on contact, or by feedback that is provided at irregular intervals. This paper describes the sequence of psychic and relational events, which develops under such circumstances, taking into account the psychological meaning of each one of them. The conflict experienced within such a relational mode is viewed as a manifestation of the transcendent function and as a mean to overcome the patriarchal dynamism in favor of the individuation process. The defense responses, which arise, are evaluated as functions of the Self, contrasting with the habits of the ego/consciousness system, which must be creatively surpassed. A clinical case illustrates the author’s views.
